AHA's - the benefits
In your search to find the right skincare regimen for keeping your skin looking youthful, fresh, free from fine lines and wrinkles, you would be familiar with products that contain an ingredient called Alpha Hydroxy Acid.
Alpha Hydroxy Acids or AHAs are an essential ingredient in any anti-aging skincare routine due to their ability to help exfoliate away dull, dead skin cells to make room for smoother, younger-looking skin to be revealed in its place.
AHAs can also help promote collagen, correct discoloration from scars and dark marks, improve appearance of surface lines and wrinkles. AHA’s are beneficial to all skin types, especially acne-prone skin, but may irritate sensitive skin depending on the concentration of the AHA.
The primary function of AHAs in skin care products is exfoliation. AHA's cause the cells in the epidermis to reveal younger looking skin beneath. They can also stimulate the production of collagen and elastin in the skin cells, which aids in revealing fresh, vibrant skin.
In addition to exfoliating the skin, AHAs are reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles as well as improving rough skin texture.
AHAs provide a wide variety of benefits for the skin, however it's vital you protect your skin ALWAYS, by applying SPF50 Sunscreen every 2-3 hours.
AHAs can reverse some of the damage caused by UV exposure but, at the same time, makes the skin more susceptible to these effects. Skincare products containing AHAs need to be used in conjunction with sunscreen that protects against both UVA and UVB rays, such as Inzincable Mineral SPF50 Sunscreen.
If you’re looking for a quality exfoliant featuring AHAs, Exfoliate To Glow is what you need. This product’s formula features multi-acid blends to provide an even, more uniform exfoliation with minimal irritation. I believe in healthy, gentle exfoliation that is progressive, not aggressive. This allows my products to deliver visible, consistent results that addresses specific skin issues while supporting the overall health and healthy appearance of the skin.
Here is a quick overview of Dr Vanita Rattan Exfoliate to Glow:
A skin brightening and hydrating chemical exfoliator, safe for skin of colour. 5% mandelic acid plus 5% lactic acid with humectants and anti-inflammatories. STEP 4 of 6 (Dr. V - PM Routine).
Why is it great for skin of colour?
The most common way to exfoliate is to use a physical scrub and to mechanically rip skin cells off. However, this is not limited to just dead skin cells and can lead to skin sensitivity, a damaged skin barrier and micro tears. A more even, controlled and gentle exfoliation is chemical exfoliation, with large Alpha Hydroxy Acid molecules i.e. Mandelic acid and Lactic acid. We prefer to avoid Glycolic acid for skin of colour as it is a small molecule and can lead to hot spots.
It is 'NAFE SAFE' to minimise chances of irritation No Denatured Alcohol, No Fragrance and No Essential Oils.
Mandelic Acid 5%, (gentlest Alpha Hydroxy Acid)
Lactic Acid 5%, (most hydrating Alpha Hydroxy Acid)
Glycerin 7% (humectant-water magnet to hydrate skin)
Centella Asiatica Extract solution (anti inflammatory during chemical exfoliation)
